I've got a firm grasp on your initial design and it looks like you've got a great idea going, but we would have to talk about how you want the clamp to lock (unless of course you don't want it to). I can see you're keeping this design simple and easy to build, so I'll model every piece off of common materials found in a hardware store, such as using standard L-bracket sizes for the clamp jaws.
