I run a business where I convert and digitize old/vintage media into digital format such as tapes, audio, reel-to-reel into thumbdrives, DVDs, CDs, and onto a company-owned app where users/customers can have their media uploaded and have direct access to.
Our setup is currently not very efficient, very productive, and I've had some thoughts about how to increase productivity and reduce downtime. We currently use various types of media players such as VHS tape players, reels players, mini DVs, video 8s, hi 8s, and many more, and use devices that read, play, and convert the media into the digital formats mentioned above. Our most common formats to convert are VHS tapes and reels (video and audio reels), and for these two specific formats, we would like a machine to which we can automate our process.
To begin with, we currently have many VHS tape readers which take up a lot of room (ive attached pictures showing the setup). We want to reduce this space taken with one machine to which we can put several VHS tapes at once and have the machine autonomously read and convert the tapes one at a time. The ideal machine would have an interface to which we can see the progress and logistics of the media being converted and as well as save the media with custom file names. Although not common, sometimes the tapes can have rips/tears that can cause the reader to crash. The ideal machine would be able to pause the process and send a notification to the user letting them know that there is an error with the tape. For this reason, the machine needs to allow for easy access inside for the user to fix any potential issues, unless designed to fix simple problems autonomously.
I wanted to simply share the goal of our ideal machine which would really increase our productivity and reduce the clutter of space taken by our many readers currently in hand. If you have any other questions, let me know and I can expand more on technical details. Thanks.
I’ve designed and set up duplication and digitizing systems for IDC in New York, allowing them to become a supplier to Netflix, among other high profile clients. I build and program custom systems for museums and theme parks, as well as retail displays and consumer products. Automating the process of dealing with varied formats sounds like an interesting challenge. At one point I wrote software for a laser disk jukebox for Sony, and the device had an interesting robotic arm that would load media into the reader. Perhaps something like that, combined with barcode stickers, to identify incoming media. I look forward to hearing more about your project.
Thanks,

Dear Hiring Manager,
I am highly interested in your project for an autonomous vintage media reader. As an experienced engineer with expertise in electronics, mechanical and electrical engineering, I am confident that I can provide you with a solution that will increase your productivity and efficiency.
I have extensive experience in designing and developing automated systems that can read and convert various types of media. I am proficient in using CAD tools such as Solidworks, Fusion 360, and AutoCAD to design detailed 2D and 3D models for manufacturing.
I understand that you want to reduce the space taken up by your current setup and automate the process of reading and converting VHS tapes and reels. I can design and build a machine that can read multiple tapes simultaneously and autonomously convert them one at a time. The machine will have an interface to monitor the progress and logistics of the media being converted and allow for custom file names to be saved.
I can also design the machine to handle any potential issues such as rips and tears in the tapes. The machine can pause the process and send a notification to the user to fix the issue. I can also design the machine to allow for easy access inside for the user to fix any potential problems.
I would be happy to discuss the technical details of the project further. Please feel free to contact me through chat for further discussion.
Thank you for considering my proposal.
