The problem is a simple one and the solution considerably less so. Irresponsible pet owners – myself included, regrettably, at a very early point in my life – letting their dogs strut on the roads, gallop after heady females and impregnating them. Their dog would return home, bearing quite a few scars of war, yes, but mostly unaltered. While the stray female, that no one wanted to give a kennel to, has to go find somewhere to give birth and to scavenge for food, while zigzagging through the rain of stones and sticks. Isn’t that a plight so heroic? A mother doing her best to save her kids? It goes to show that maternal instinct, at least, does not discriminate. It hits humans and animals alike.
