HTML5 Barcode Reader (PDF417)

Product Mission: Consumer-grade HTML5 app which optically reads PDF417 format barcodes. Function: The app shall execute entirely on the end-user’s client-side hardware. When the end-user initiates a barcode-scan, the app activates the device camera and attempts to recognize, optically, the presence of a readable barcode. If a barcode is detected, the app attempts to decode the information embedded in the barcode. Requirements: The end-user population is expected to be large and diverse, with many kinds of client-side hardware and software. • Desktop (Windows, Linux, Mac OSX) Typically this is expected to be a laptop with an integrated camera or a desktop with a “USB Webcam” • Mobile (Android, iOS) This is expected to be a smartphone’s integrated camera • Runs in standard Web Browsers (IE, Chrome, Safari, Firefox) The app shall have reasonable resilience to normal stress factors that influence the physical paper media that barcodes are printed on such as (but not limited to) fading, blurring, damage, wrinkling, and so on. The app shall have reasonable resilience to normal stress factors involved in optical image capture such as (but not limited to) lighting issues, white balance issues, camera focus issues, and so on. We see three viable scenarios for engaging a Freelancer team on this project: 1. You have already solved this exact problem and have software that you can license to us at a fair fee. 2. You are an expert in barcode scanning and can collaborate with an expert HTML5 developer to design and build this app. 3. You are an expert HTML5 developer and can collaborate with an expert in barcode scanning to design and build this app. 4. Possibly there are other viable scenarios, we are open to proposals. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA: A successful delivery of this project requires the following verifiable results: 100% barcode-read accuracy “in-sample”, this means zero false-positives and zero false-negatives. At least 80% barcode-read accuracy “out-of-sample” with zero false-positives.
