We're going to buy a clean virtual server and want it to be configured as password-protected HTTP proxy. The software is up to you, but it should be open source, under stable version and be maintained by developers community. It should be installed from official *nix repositories (nginx, squid or whatever). We prefer Debian as OS but it can be also up to you to choose. * Proxy should be hosted on port 5858 and be fully closed from anonymous access by HTTP Basic authentication. Proxy should provide access to all sites and servers in the Web with no restrictions. * Proxy should be usable from Mozilla. * Proxy should have bigger timeouts for the requests (at least 1 min for waiting for reply from service being proxy-ed to the client) * Proxy should easily handle at least 100 simultaneous connections from one or several clients and handle them properly. We want this project to be divided into two steps (milestones). They are 1. You give us system requirements, we approve your software choice and we buy proper server. 2. We give you the passwords and you do the job. You provide us instructions: * How to stop/start the proxy server daemon * How to change the HTTP login-password it is protected with * How to change timeouts, max simultaneous connections and other configuration params.

I will setup squid for you as proxy. I have configured squid in ISPs for heavy duty usage. username /passwords will be stored in a MySQL database which you can edit easily via PhpMyAdmin. I will tune proxy for best performance, if there are going to be 100 simultanous users then I will use aufs storage scheme. Squid performs better when Disk I/O load is divided among multiple disks better if 15k rpm SAS drives or SSDs it depends on you. Regards usman

Hello there, i will setup SQUID proxy and configure it as you with, but for servers specs i want know how many connections you want use via this VPS\Server... if this is < 100 connections onetime you can get any cheap VPS with 1-2 GB RAM and 1-2 cpu cores... not important yet. Waiting for your answer.

With http proxy you will have problems with https ssl sites. I can rather suggest you a socks proxy with all configurable options . I am telling you this because a client of mine faced this problem recently . He was happy with socks proxy . Ping me for any further queries . I have 7 years of IT Infrastructure experience.
