Overview
Aim of this project is to develop a German income tax return submission website, iOS and Android app (referred to as Project). The website functionality should be similar to [login to view URL] The website is wished to be designed in the format of [login to view URL]
Requirements
- Project to be developed in English and German languages.
- User should be able to register using a new account, Gmail or Facebook accounts.
- Tax return filing can be selected for the last 4 years (Ex. 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015). The years of filing will update every year.
- Form for getting details from the user viz. Name, address, religion, marital status etc.
- The form should automatically select the German tax office based on the zip code of the home address. There’s a list provided by the German tax dept.
- Form should take the expenses done in the year. (refer [login to view URL])
- Income data can be taken as an input from the scan of the German wage tax statement called “Lohnsteuerbescheinigung”. In fact, Lohnsteuerbescheinigung contains Name, Date of Birth, address, tax class of the user along with the income details. All the details can be prefilled in the submission form from the scan of the Lohnsteuerbescheinigung.
- The form asks for many additional expense details like professional expenses, home-office travel expenses, family & home expenses, training, work, relocation, healthcare-related expenses etc.
- Taking all the income and expenses, the website provides real-time tax refund estimate.
- Submission form asks for IBAN details of the user. The IBAN detail should be checked for the correctness.
- After all details are filled, form to be checked for errors, warnings and tax refund amount.
- To continue with the tax return filing, payment to be collected from the user.
- After payment is done, tax return to be filed and data transferred electronically to the tax office.
- At present, pdf is generated, which needs to be signed and sent to the German tax office.
- However, [login to view URL] came out with a new provision, where if identification details are provided, sending signed hard copy will not be necessary and everything can be done online. This needs to be explored.
- Use data to be saved. Functionality for porting current year’s data for next year’s tax return filing.
- It would be good if the developer has knowledge of German/able to understand German as all the libraries and documentation provided by the German tax dept. Are in the German language. Although, I have done a translation of the documentation in English.

- As per my research is done so far, it would be good to develop a REST API using the available library. But whatever method is the best should be used.
