Methodology Paper
The purpose of this paper is to describe and explain an appropriate method of investigation for the research questions (attachments) and/or hypotheses you proposed in your literature review. Begin your paper by offering your RQs and/or Hs. Following your RQ/Hs, your paper will be split into the following sections:
1. Participants/Texts
If using participants, you should describe the people in your sample and relevant
demographic information about them. You should include the target number of individuals
you would like to use in your sample, along with a detailed description of the population
(university students, older adults, etc.). If using texts/images, you should describe in detail
the universe of texts/images. You should plan to discuss how you to recruit individuals for
your study and, if quantitative in nature, sampling procedures.
2. Procedures
In this section, you will need to describe in detail the procedures and methods you intend to
use in your study. Be sure to go through the procedures step-by-step so that the procedures could be replicated by someone else reading your manuscript. Are your procedures mirrored after someone else’s research (if so, you should cite him/her as a reference)? If using participants, what will be the instructions to the participants? What will the participants be told about the definitions of concepts and procedures for the study? Be sure to appropriately address ethical considerations of your study (e.g., how will participants be ensured that their participation is voluntary and that their information would be kept confidential?). If texts, how will they be acquired? How did you select these texts? What will be examined (i.e., original documents or transcripts)?
3. Measures or Instruments
i. You must include the instrument that you plan to use in the appendix of the paper. You
must explain in sufficient depth what the independent and dependent variables are. If your
study is quantitative in nature, you may use pre-existing scales for your study that have been reported and used elsewhere with citations. In this case, you should provide the reliability and validity for the scales. Be sure to include example items to illustrate face validity. Detail the instructions for completing the scale.
ii. If your study is qualitative, you should include a discussion of how you will observe and
examine the concepts of interest. If you are proposing interviews or focus groups as a
methodology, you will need you provide example questions and discuss how you intend to
record information gathered, as well as include the entire interview/focus group schedule in n appendix. Be sure to explain why you chose the interview questions or observation
contexts and what information will be gathered during your investigation.
In writing your methodology section, be sure to consider the questions of validity raised by
chapter 2 of the Wimmer & Dominick textbook. That is, state why you make the decisions that you do. A successful methodology paper will address the sections outlined above in a complete and detailed manner in about two-three pages + instrumentation in appendix, as well as integrate appropriate supporting material and citations as needed.
