I feel that I am an excellent candidate for this project. I have access to data bases through my institution and have been using databases in my own research since 2004. Identifying all of the known aging-related gene variants requires not just skills with parsing data, but also evaluation of the data quality. Through my scientific training I have learned how to identify gene-function relationships and identify high quality science. My strategy for completing this project will be two-fold. Milestone 1: Download known human and model organism age-related genes from GenAge and AnAge databases (Tacutu R et al., Nucleic Acids Research, 2013). These are manually curated databases of known genes associated with aging. I will then tidy up the data. Milestone 2: Identify age related genes from publications. Keyword search in Pubmed and Scopus, download all publications from June of 2017 to present (last release date of GenAge). Take union of both publication sets and remove duplicates. Manually curate downloaded publications to identify aging-related genetic variants and compare with known Human and model organism genes. Identify verified and likely candidates. Although the strategy in milestone 2 will be time-consuming, it will be the surest way to identify all known aging-related genetic variants.
