I have done a study on cognitive, behaviour and educational outcomes in children with spina bifida, assessed by parents and teachers, which received very low participation. In my viva I was asked for this requirement:Add more reflection of what can be learned from this study in terms of engaging these families in research, and in general how can future studies improve on this. For example, families of control children that took part were generally better educated. This is not surprising, since one can argue that families of control children had fewer incentives to take part in a research, particularly if parents thought it did not concern their own child. Is there some way that could have helped engage the families in the control group? It is very positive that the study involved an organisation already engaging with families affected by SB, the results have not (yet) been fed back to this organisation, the schools and the families involved. Please disseminate the findings in a user- friendly way and collect some feedback from the families and key stakeholders. This is crucial for the future development of a programme of research that involves and engages this population. Accordingly, please research background literature to inform, develop and demonstrate (in a new chapter) appropriate engagement with those parents, teachers and any other people who are regarded as the major stakeholders in the findings and in what may come next (to validate recommendations). Such engagement to include data collection (gather opinions) regarding the study findings. In summary it is necessary to more fully reflect upon findings and discuss the learning achieved through the study: please emphasise the learning around feasibility of future research in the area. *I have a summary table of literature review (from 43 papers) and need to synthesise information in terms of scientific writing. Its is just about methodology and participation. No need to synthesise the findings at all. This information will be the first bit. I will do the focused group discussion with parents of children with SB after (for collecting their feedback).
