Expand Joomla component with print function

For an existing component i want to extend the component page with a print function, I think the standard Joomla way of generating a print page should work, but not sure. I want to be able to set a custom header and footer to be used on each printed page. Definitely want to keep things inside the component and avoid the need for changing the template in some way. Inside the content i will set/generate markers for a page-break. So when viewing the page on the screen the page can get fairly long and the page-break markers are ignored. On the print page however the page-break markers should trigger a paper-page-break. So a single web-page may be printed on any number of paper pages, re-using the header and footer per page. Note the header and footer need to be in the right location. So if a page-break is located after a short paragraph the footer needs to be at the bottom of the page and not right after the paragraph. Will provide the component software to bidders i feel are capable with the right profile and history.
