WHAT IS THIS PROJECT
We are looking to build a proof-of-concept app for travel stories. We are primarily looking to validate the user experience. This means that there are minimal backend requirements, and many things can be simplified (for example, the data can be pre-loaded to make the experience faster and remove any backend dependencies).
That being said, the code must be modular and allow for easy modifications. For example, moving a UI element around the screen should be possible to accomplish without making changes in many places in code.
OVERVIEW:
An app that allows users to watch instagram-like "stories". Stories are pieces of content that contain images and auto-playing videos, and support navigation via gestures.
The app will have a landing page with tiles representing a story, grouped by some
HIGH-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
1. Main View.
Displays tiles for each story. Each tile is either an image or auto-animating video, and has a caption. Tiles are grouped by category. Clicking on a tile launches the Story View.
2. Story View.
Full screen showing 1 or more (up to 6) pages of the "story". Each page is an image or an auto-playing video with some text overlaid on top. Gestures lead to other actions: swipe up shows a panel of details (same per story), tap right - next page, tap left - previous page, swipe from right to left - next story, swipe from left to right - previous story.
Number of pages and active page is shown at the top of the screen with bars (one bar per story page) - like in Instagram story. A photo page changes to next page automatically after 5 seconds. A video page changes to next page when the video reaches the end.
Actions: users can "like" a photo. This will be done by double-tapping or by clicking on a button. For simplicity, the app doesn't need to track whether the story was liked before by that user - just issue a fire-and-forget POST request to our endpoint.
3. Details View.
This view appears per story when user slides up. It contains:
- Description section (text)
- Tip section (text, optional)
This view is slid up, not fully covering the story view. To dismiss, user slides this down. The content is scrollable.

When story is clicked, it starts a viewing of multiple related stories. When the viewing ends, the Story View closes and the user is back on the Main View.
TIMELINE: 2 weeks
MILESTONE:
I suggest breaking into 4 milestones:
(a) App navigation done with actual content, but no style
(b) Auto-playing videos, auto switching story pages, gesture-based navigation
(c) Styling + feedback #1

I’ve been creating mobile apps since before the iPhone SDK was first released. The first commercial app I developed was the highly successful IBeer, which was released the first day the App Store launched. I created many apps that incorporate custom media players. Checking the skills listed, it looks like you may want to use a html to app solution (like phonegap). While I could program it that way, for smoothest results I would recommend a native solution, with XML + Java for Android, and Storyboards + Swift / Objective C for iOS.
