This is for UK lawyers and legal advisors only. Thanks. I have a dispute with a property management company who work in house for a large corporate landlord. We are a small corporate tenant who sublet the properties from the landlord. Recently we have found that the landlord is refusing to give our deposit back for a property which we vacated on April 16th. They are saying that due to the electricity meter being a changed remotely (its a smart meter) to pay as you go they will withhold our entire deposit until it is changed back. We are in the process of changing it back but we don't believe there is any legal justification in them being able to withhold the deposit since it is not covered by the lease. There is a small issue however in that the management company with whom we have the contract has been dissolved and another company taken its place with same directors and same registered office. We hope that they are not going to rely on this to deny us our deposit. We would like to make a legal claim against them for this if they are unwilling to refund out deposit.

Hi. You need someone with the right legal background. Also, someone with the requisite contract (lease) skills. Ideally someone from a Common Law jurisdiction e.g. England/ Ireland, so they're familiar with CL contracts. I'm an Irish student barrister with 2 law degrees to date, an undergraduate degree (BCL - Law) and a master's degree (LLM - Business Law). Few issues at play here but I can research the matter and explain the law. I'll need see the lease.
