Convert jpg to vector - edge lit acrylic

Hi all, I want to make a edgelit acrylic sign with this design: [login to view URL] Have you made a vector for edgelit acrylic before for engraving on a laser cutter? The design must be vector based (AI or SVG format; AI is preferred), and in only one color, with no fills. I have tried to make a image trace in Illustrator of the [login to view URL] file, and there are too many white fill areas. The laser software engraves all the fills, which does not work for making an edge-lit engraving. See the file star wars example to see an example of the acrylic engraving style. The Reaper_portrait is the character from the game, Overwatch. if you want to extend the edges of the file, that's fine, but I don't want to pay extra for that. Also, since you are making a derivative work, you don't need to include the artwork author's signature (Julio 2016). So basically, what I would like, is a AI vector file, with only STROKE and no fill. The stroke may have different stroke thickness, that's OK, but no FILL. Let me know if you have any questions.
