I have developed several systems using atmega, PIC and arduino microcontroller and boards and I have used Atmega 328 chip developing my own projects using arduino programming language. Hi ! There are some technical stuffs to clearify for the beggining. What kind of appication do you need, how many concurent sockets, and the amount of data per request/per response - this is also important cause ESP8266 doesn't have HW handshake (RTS/CTS) in all implementations - I found this issue and I ordered for me now ESP8266-03 which does have PIO13,15 connected (RTS/CTS). Also you should consider that this module is working on serial (the speed is overall low) and you can;t consider high bandwidth communication as streaming audio, video or similar. This module is good to be used for signaling, automations, more or less "internet of things". I personally used it to integrate some sensors and light control in the house to a server. On the other hand, I did an easier protocol (not HTTP) - it can;t be used with a "standard" server -I have a daemon which is communicating on the server, in order to lower the sent/received data (removed expensive http headers) and also to lower the CPU consumption on the device - I'm also using slow and chip AVR controllers from Atmel. If you're using Atmega328 - you can also take the examples of server/client form the Arduino - they will work perfectly in your design - and this is cheap !. Personally I'm not using Arduino framework, I'm writting my programs in c directly (I'm working with AVR from 14 years) If you have any question please don't hesitate to ask me. BR, Horia Pop
