We provide a digital reading platform for middle and high school students to help them build knowledge and the habits of thinking. To date, we have produced a lot of instruction (e.g. questions) for the content but have not created our own original content. We want to start that now. Why? The nonfiction texts kids have to read for school are boring. Adults rarely pick up textbooks to learn something, but we make students do this all the time. And nonfiction current events written for 10 - 18 year olds is done in much the same way. The impersonal strewing together of facts does not make for a fun read. Students are forced to read these texts, memorize information for a test, and forget everything shortly thereafter. We believe nonfiction can be written in a much more engaging way for middle and high school students. In the same way nonfiction books have grown as a category and TV and podcasts have delivered much more engaging content, we want to experiment with providing more compelling nonfiction for students to read. Some ways to produce this compelling nonfiction is by using a narrative, mystery, or misconception to drive the piece. Secondly, explaining the interesting "story behind the story" can also be very useful. But we're also looking forward to seeing what you come up with. This project involves writing one or two nonfiction articles that we will test with a student audience. Ideally, it is about a current topic in the news that you know about. If you are successful, there will be opportunities to produce several more pieces.
