Topic 1: The construction of what noted historian Howard Zinn called "the Color Line" - the arbitrary social observation of how a race is treated, based on their color - has most methodically been applied to African-Americans and persons of African descent in the United States, despite the wide range of populations who live here. If this "line" is arbitrary, or a subjective and legally unsupported in American culture, why does it continue to exist in the US in 2016?

Our nation building stories tell of brave people who tore up roots to come to contribute to the United States. Most immigrants, we learn, were not welcomed with open arms, but rather faced bitter discrimination as they worked so hard to make their lives. However, when we imagine these immigrants of our nations past through the lens of memory, we imagine strong and courageous ancestors.
Why might the immigrants of the past be venerated but immigrants of the present criminalized?
