Aim
Analysis of incidence and survival rates of patients diagnosed with pineal gland tumors in the period from 2000 to 2013 based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.
Introduction
Pineal gland tumors are a rare type of tumors. They represent less than 1% of all primary brain tumors. They are commonly seen in pediatric patients where they constitute 3% of brain tumors.
Methods
Out of all cases documented in the 18 registries of SEER database, we identified patients diagnosed with pineal gland tumors subtyped as Germ Cell Tumors (GCTs), Pineal parenchymal Tumors (PPTs), stromal tumors and others. Using SEER*Stat software version 8.3.2. We calculated the age-adjusted incidence and survival rates with different treatment modalities for males and females of two age groups: below and above 20.
Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis were done to examine factors affecting survival.
