Growth hacking is, in short, experimentation. The goal of growth hacking is to find the most effective ways of growing a business in the shortest time frame possible. This method is how a little-known company can become a household name in only a couple of years. The phrase itself is only five years old, however the rapid growth methods can be seen in older companies such as Facebook and Airbnb.
Generally, when building a business, a goal of the marketing team would be proportional growth to consider expenses, however the goal of growth hacking is to primarily put feasibility aside in favor of fast growth that will then either grow further or remain stable. A large factor of this is the product itself, however growth hacking is to build the steep increase at the start.
Growth hacking often aims to do so with creativity and analytics, with pure focus on using all means available to increase website traffic or sales. Social media has become a fast, cheap way of doing so, and targeting to a specific audience may also be effective. If a product is primarily going to be used by one age group, then a growth hacker is not going to spend time marketing to people outside of that range.
